The Competency-Based Instrument Rating Course is performed on single-engine piston aeroplanes SEP(Land) is aimed to Pilots holding a Private Pilot Licence PPL(A) or a Commercial Pilot Licence CPL(A) who

  • would like to carry out planned private flights on class SEP(Land) aeroplanes with a significantly higher probability of being able to carry out flights in non-visual flight conditions
  • aspire to a career as a commercial pilot with a business jet operator or airline, since almost all commercial flights are completed as so-called IFR flights (flights conducted under Instrument Flight Rules)
General

The Instrument Flight Rating enables you to fly an aeroplane in very poor or no visibility (in cloud), so called Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC). This is known as IFR flying – flying under instrument flight rules.

Without outward visibility, a pilot can only fly using the aeroplane’s own flight instruments and navigation equipment together with ground and satellite-based air navigation equipment.

The theory for this training can be based on the following courses

  • a CB-IR theory course, or
  • an IR(A) theory course, or
  • an ATPL(A) theory course.
Objective

The aim of the modular competency-based (CB) instrument rating flying training course is to train PPL(A) or CPL(A) holders to provide the level of proficiency needed to operate single-engine piston (land) aeroplanes

  • under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR)
  • including Performance Based Navigation (PBN)
  • in Instrumental Meteorological Conditions (IMC)
  • with a minimum decision height after an instrument approach of no less than 200 feet (60 m)

This module takes into account prior instrument flight instruction and experience.

It shall be taken in an ATO or consist of a combination of instrument flight instruction provided by an IRI(A) or an FI(A) holding the privilege to provide training for the IR and flight instruction within an ATO.

Requirements

Before commencing the course, the applicant must

  • hold a current PPL(A) or CPL(A)
  • have completed a class rating SEP(Land) course

Before commencing the flight training phase 1, the applicant must

  • hold language proficiency English ICAO level 4 or higher
  • have completed the subjects “Radio Navigation” and “Instrumentation” of the distance learning course of the theoretical knowledge instruction.

Before commencing flight training phase 3, the applicant must have completed all subjects of the distance learning course of the theoretical knowledge instruction.

Before application the applicant must:

  • hold a Night Rating
  • have completed at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot in Command (PIC)
  • have passed the theoretical knowledge examination.
Structure
  • 80 hours Theory (72 hours web-based remote learning + 8 hours Classroom)*
    • * a completed IR(A) or ATPL(A) examination replaces this CB-IR theory course
  • 40 hours Instrument time under instruction (25 hours may be instrument ground time in an FNPT II)
